Evansville, IN Family Photographer - Styling

As an Evansville, IN family photographer, I’m always longing for spring to arrive after what always seems like a never-ending winter. Spring is finally on its way and I am getting so excited to get back outside and photograph some gorgeous families this year! One of the most common questions I get from clients is regarding wardrobe and how to style your family for your session. After investing money into precious memories, you most definitely don’t want to show up feeling or looking like a mismatched group of clowns, or even worse, a totally matchy matchy family (yes, I’m talking jeans and white button up shirts people…RUN). I’m going to be sharing with you what photographs beautifully, what needs to just stay home in the closet, and tips on choosing your style. I hope this helps as you start planning you wardrobe this year. Let’s dive in!

Ashley chose a fun and casual look for their summer session. it was hot and humid, the sun was shining beautifully, and the location was filled with lots of natural elements. Her summer color palette was the perfect contrast to all of the surrounding greens! Her maxi dress flowed perfectly with the breeze, her daughter’s dress had just the right amount of pattern and texture to break up the solids, and Trevor’s blue top added a fun contrasting pop to their look! To me, their look spoke fun, casual, and flirty! Fits them perfectly <3

1. Finding your style:
The most important step in styling your session is deciding what style you’re envisioning in the first place! What does this mean exactly? You mean I don’t just randomly pick out clothes I think are cute and be done with it? It goes much deeper than that. The wardrobe you choose will completely set the tone and vibe for your session. Believe it or not, wardrobe plays a huge part in telling your family’s story through images! So how do you figure out your style? What I find to be helpful is hopping on Pinterest or looking through magazines to just get inspired. Certain images will speak to you and others won’t. Start some Pinterest boards or jot down ideas of what you see that you like and dislike. This will help tremendously in narrowing down what you are envisioning your session to look like. Don’t choose a style based off of what others like, but what truly speaks to you and your family. Feel free to share your Pinterest board with me, and check mine out for inspiration if you’re stuck

2. Colors:
You’ve decided on a style, now it’s time to figure out a color scheme. This can be one of the most overwhelming parts of wardrobe planning! Trust me, I know! Last year we had our family photos taken by the lovely Katie Fritz with Exhale Photography (image above) and I cannot explain to you how stressed I was at times just trying to choose the perfect outfits. One of the main reasons I’m writing this blog post for others ;) Again, Pinterest can definitely help with this. However, if you’re the type who would just get overwhelmed by how many choices there are when it comes to color schemes, Pinterest may not be your best friend here. Instead, think about what color you love and is flattering on you (I’m talking to you, mama). From there, create a color palette based off of what looks best with your color. I’ll use my family as an example. This is how I built our wardrobe, starting with my dress. I nailed down our style (classy/romantic). I decided I wanted to wear a burgundy colored dress, so I started building everyone else’s outfits based off of that. I loved Jake in charcoal, so I added gray into the color palette. Next, cream is my dream, so I knew I wanted to incorporate some ivory for the kids to add some contrast to the dark colors Jake and I would be wearing. I added in pops of the same burgundy color in Lily’s bow and Dawson’s undershirt to pull things together. I debated back and forth about what color top Lily should wear, and ended up going with a blush pink to stay within the burgundy/romantic color scheme. I put Jake and Dawson in some khakis to keep the whole feel a little classier and we all wore brown toned shoes to keep it earthy! There ya have it! Once you nail down your style and initial color, things start to flow a lot quicker as you add in pieces.

Olivia chose a beautiful soft pink, blue, and black color palette for their September session. I absolutely loved Olivia’s beautiful long floral dress. It had so much movement, and tied perfectly together with the solid blacks and blues! Her dress is the perfect example of adding a pattern mixed in with solids to add some life and energy to the session.

3. Texture and Accessories
Once you nail down your style and initial color, things start to flow more quickly as you add in pieces. You now can begin thinking about adding in pieces of texture and accessories that will bring visual interest to your photos. An easy way to do this is by choosing different fabrics and finishes on clothing. For example, my dress was a silky fabric without a whole lot of extra texture going on. To add some dimension I made sure Jake’s sweater wasn’t just solid, but had some little hints of spotted light grays. I had Lily wear some adorable hand-made bloomers over her knit tights. They were adorned with lace accents and leather ties to add a little bit of vintage flair. I loved that her bloomers added some pattern to the whole ensemble to break up some of the solid colors! For Dawson’s sweater I looked for one with some detail and design. It was a super soft wool that looked and felt so cozy! I’m not a huge jewelry person, but sometimes small accent pieces can really pull a look together. I opted for some small ivory colored earrings to tie in with Dawson and Lily’s outfits, and a dainty rose gold necklace since I was wearing an off-shoulder dress. The necklace helped add some detail! You can find texture and accessories in so many ways! Hats, suspenders, hair pieces, cardigans, layers, etc. Find pieces with lots of detail and dimension and make sure to stick to your initial style.

Evansville IN Newborn Photographer - Boy and Gender Neutral Names

Remember a couple weeks ago when I compiled a list of girl names? Did you all find some inspiration there? I sure hope so! Let’s dive into some boy and gender neutral names to get your creative juices flowing!

IMG_6668-Edit.jpg

Bobbie - I’ve always loved this name as a gender neutral name! I think either way you go this is the perfect name for a cute and spunky little one! I found several different meanings of this name, most coming from the name Robert, but one that I liked was ‘bright and famous’.

Charlie - Another super cute gender neutral name! I actually think I know more girl Charlies vs. boys! According to the experts, this name actually means ‘man’. But I wouldn’t let that steer you away from naming your sweet baby girl. I love this name!

Frankie - Gender neutral, and cute as can be! This name stems from Frank or Frances, essentially meaning from France, or ‘free one’. I love that!

Holland - I didn’t find any significant meanings here, but it definitely originates from the Netherlands! Give your babe a little geography lesson here? If that’s your thing of course ;) I think this name can be super pretty for a girl, and very handsome/masculine for a boy. Love it!

Nicholas - Who wouldn’t wanna be friends with a guy named Nick!? Anytime I hear the short version of this name, I feel like I would be talking to someone fun, outgoing, and just down right awesome. A greek name meaning ‘victory of the people’, this name is strong! Also, you can totally tell your kiddo that his name came from Santa Claus himself… (St. Nick)…am I right!?

IMG_6684-Edit.jpg

Jackson - With different spelling variations, this name is darn right adorable. I’ve seen this name blow up over the past few years, and I totally understand why! Other than coming from President Andrew Jackson, this name is known to be a Scottish name meaning ‘God has been gracious; has shown favor.’

Bennett - I love love love this name! There’s something about it that sounds so distinguished and charming. This name comes from the Latin name ‘Benedict’ meaning ‘blessed’. The meaning just speaks for itself.

Wells - Other than meaning a literal well, spring, etc., you could play around here with a deeper meaning behind it. Filling your ‘well’ with love, joy, etc. Maybe I’m reaching there? Either way, this is a cute, cute name!

Lincoln - This name is usually given out of honor of dear President Abraham Lincoln. In my opinion, it’s strong, humble, and compassionate. The perfect name!

Lucas - There’s a geographical meaning behind this name, (Lucania, a southern region in Italy), but it s most commonly used from the name ‘Luke’, the doctor and saint in the Bible. So much rich history to this name!

Cashen - Okay. I’ll be honest, this was the first time I’d ever heard this one! I cannot for the life of me find a meaning, which could be so perfect for you if you’re the creative type. Create your own meaning for this name, or just go with it because you just love it. Who cares! It’s unique, cute, and definitely a keeper.

Jude - Oh I love this one! Shortened version of the names ‘Judah’ and ‘Judas’, the Hebrew meaning of this name is ‘praise’. Just perfect!

I hope this list gave you new and expecting mamas some inspiration. If you missed the girls name list, you can find that here! Have any other name ideas? Comment them below!

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

I hesitated wanting to do a post about this particular topic because I myself have not lost a baby, so I didn’t want to come across the wrong away. However, the women I have met who have lost babies are some of the strongest women I know and deserve to be honored. Any woman and family who loses a child, no matter the age, is someone who should be remembered. Someone who should be shown honor and respect. Someone who should never be dismissed, and who should always be shown love. This is also a difficult post for me to write because having two children of my own, my heart aches for those who have lost their babies. Words cannot accurately express the sorrow I feel and my hope for this post is to shine some light on the brave women and their families who have had to endure such a tragedy. If you yourself have lost a baby, I just want to say I love you. If you know someone who has lost a baby, send them your love, not pity, and let them know that they mean something to you and that their child is loved, safe, and never forgotten. Also know that while some women experience the joy of a “rainbow” baby after their storm, there are also women who have not experienced their rainbow yet. Be kind, be gentle, be respectful, and just be there in whatever way they need you to be. While I’m highlighting three women who have experieced a rainbow after their storm, I don’t ever want to dismiss those whose rainbow has not yet appeared. You are seen, heard, and loved.

There are three specific women I’ve had the pleasure of photographing in this past year who have all agreed to share their photos/stories with me about how they have endured pregnancy and infant loss. All three of these women are my heroes, along with every other woman who has had to go through this.

Johnna and her other babies honoring her sweet Maylynn. Here are some of her words:
”Maylynn Grace is my stillborn. She was born on January 21st, 2017. My hopeful words for other women suffering a similar journey is make sure you grieve for your baby and take all the time you need to but don’t stay there. God does not intend for us to stay forever in grievance. He wants you to lean on Him and draw strength from your mighty Father. You also need to trust in His plan He has for your life. Have faith that He knows best. Everything has a purpose! Your baby has a purpose! Your experience has a purpose! YOU have a purpose! Keep living momma & always remember your sweet baby! “

Kaitlyn and Drake with their rainbow baby, and two more baby boys on the way <3 Here are Kaitlyn’s words:
God is good and faithful. If you surrender your life to him he WILL bless you beyond measure. My journey with pregnancy/my babies are proof of that. Sometimes our future isn’t exactly what God has planned for us because it is even better than we could have imagined.”

Katie and family honoring and remembering their precious Evelyn. I love you and admire your strength, girl. You’ve been so open about your journey and are a light to others who are experiencing darkness.
